What is the Global Science Scholars Program?

The Global Science Scholars (GSS) Program offers early-career scientists the chance to undertake groundbreaking bioengineering and biomedical research internationally. Designed to foster global scientific collaborations, this program supports scholars who wish to conduct research outside their degree-granting country—either at top Japanese institutions or at leading U.S. universities affiliated with the CZ Biohub Network.

Created by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) and Stellar Science Foundation (SS-F), this fellowship aims to catalyze disruptive discoveries at the interface of technology and science.

Who Can Apply?

  • Hold a doctoral degree awarded on or after July 1, 2021.
  • Must have an undergraduate or PhD degree from a U.S. institution (for Japan placement) OR a Japanese institution (for U.S. placement).
  • Must be eligible for the appropriate visa (U.S. or Japan).
  • Must be able to start the fellowship by July 1, 2025.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary, high-impact research and international collaboration.
  • Proficiency in English is required.

Fellowship Types

Postdoctoral Research in Japan:
For candidates who earned degrees in the U.S. and want to work in Japanese labs.

Postdoctoral Research in the U.S.:
For candidates who earned degrees in Japan and want to work with CZ Biohub-affiliated labs in the U.S. (San Francisco, Chicago, New York areas).

How to Apply for Global Science Scholars 2025

Step 1: Register and log in at the CZI Application Portal.

Step 2: Select the “Global Science Scholars Program RFA” and click Apply.

Step 3: Complete the online application, including:

  • Applicant Details
  • Lab/Project Selection (choose top labs from U.S. or Japan list)
  • Research Summary
  • Full CV (no page limit, PDF format)
  • Two Letters of Recommendation
  • Confirmation for Handling of Personal Information

Step 4: Submit your application early — deadlines are on the last Tuesday of each month until May 27, 2025, or until fellowships are filled!
